If there's a Dyson beauty dupe you're curious about, the chances are I've tested it.

As a beauty tech reporter with three years (and counting) on the Dyson beat, I have put my hair through it all in the name of answering the question: "Are Dyson products really worth all that money?"

A quick glance at my coverage on the topic will tell you my short answer: no, not really. In many cases, I think there's a significantly cheaper dupe that does the trick. However, a long answer requires more nuance as to why, so for convenience, I've compiled all my thoughts on Dyson dupes into this single guide (which I'll inevitably be updating as more products hit the market).

The Dyson Airwrap is an impressive multi-styler that's by no means essential

The cost of Dyson products

In our guide so far, we have dupes for the Dyson Airwrap and the Dyson Supersonic, which are the two most popular beauty products from the brand, but certainly not the only ones available. Their entire lineup is as follows:

  • Dyson Airwrap — $599.99

  • Dyson Airwrap i.d. — $599.99

  • Dyson Supersonic — $429.99

  • Dyson Supersonic Nural — $499.99

  • Dyson Supersonic r — $569.99

  • Dyson Corrale — $499.99

  • Dyson Airstrait — $499.99

The list also shows that Dyson's products are expensive, which is why dupes tend to be a popular choice. At the time of writing, I'm testing out the Supersonic Nural and some potential dupes. I also plan to test dupes for the Airwrap i.d., Corrale, and Airstrait for future updates of this guide.

I've also reached out to a rep from Dyson to see if they anticipate any price increases with tariffs, and will update this guide when I hear back.

How to get Dyson beauty for less

If you're dead set on buying Dyson, there are ways of avoiding the full (painful) prices. Two of my favorite tips for getting Dyson on the cheap:

  • Buy refurbished: Dyson's own refurbished marketplace, Dyson Renewed, is a great first place to look. The selection isn't the most extensive, but products can clock in at less than half their original price, along with a year-long warranty for parts and labor. Walmart is another place where refurbished Dyson often goes on sale, but you'll want to double-check the seller — I only recommend buying directly from Walmart or Dyson's authorized seller page, Dyson, Inc., as found onthis Supersonic listing.

  • Wait for a sale: Dyson products actually go on sale quite often, with Black Friday being the only real time they might drop lower in price than other sales throughout the year. Typically, price drops are $100, so I recommend waiting to buy until you see a sale pop up at Amazon, Walmart, Best Buy, or Dyson's website. As I'm writing this, the Supersonic, Supersonic Nural, and Corrale are all $100 off. If you prefer not to do your own scanning, our deals team stays on top of any Dyson sales.

Who it's for

You want the Dyson Airwrap, but you don't want to pay $600 — fair! The Shark FlexStyle may not look exactly the same as the original multi-styler, but it delivers a near-identical experience for half the price (and often even less, thanks to its frequent price drops on Amazon).

Why we picked this

While I can appreciate a dupe that has no aim beyond being a straight-up replica, I always appreciate when a brand aims to improve on the more expensive tool it's duping. From the beginning, Shark did exactly that with the FlexStyle. Sure, many of the attachments were clearly Airwrap copies, but Shark took it a step further and decided to switch up the base of its styler, and added a diffuser to its multi-styler lineup a full year before the Airwrap.

With the hinge in the base that allows it to twist, you can style your hair with it vertically or in the L-shape like a traditional hair dryer. Even better, you can use the base without an attachment to roughly dry your hair — something that isn't advertised with the Dyson (and doesn't work all that well, from when I've tried it). This flexibility comes in handy with the diffuser, as I was able to twist the base into the L-shape and hover diffuse my hair from the top down to create less frizz. With the Airwrap, the base is too long to do that comfortably.

There are a few different configurations of the FlexStyle, so your attachment lineup will depend on which one you get. For the standard option, you'll get four different styling attachments (and again, the ability to use the base as a hair dryer), while the Dyson comes with six. However, Shark smartly offers a build-your-own option that starts at $20 cheaper — it comes with only three attachments, but the ability to curate the styler to your exact needs, which is worth the trade-off in my opinion.

As for the curling attachments, they are shorter than those of the Airwrap Complete Long, and require you to switch barrels to change the direction of your curls (where the Airwrap's do not). While it is the slightest bit more inconvenient, my hot take is that neither the Airwrap nor the FlexStyle feels particularly geared toward creating defined curls so much as a curled, blown-out look. For the latter, I prefer to keep the curls all in one direction on each side of my head, meaning that it only requires one barrel switch with the FlexStyle. If you are into easily switching directions of the curls, the extra money might be worth it — but if you're looking for a true curled look, I recommend checking out the other Airwrap dupe on this list, the T3 Aire 360.

One final gripe is that the FlexStyle doesn't come with a case, and a hair tool with several attachments isn't exactly the easiest to store. That said, you can sometimes find promotions on Shark's website that throw in a free case. At the time of writing, one comes with the build-your-own model. Otherwise, you'll be shelling out an extra $53 for a case.

Laifen Swift

Best Dyson Supersonic dupe

$139.99 Walmart

The Good & The Bad

  • Lightweight and compact
  • Not too loud
  • Powerful air intensity
  • Good size for travel
  • Intuitive and well placed controls
  • Often on sale
  • Doesn't break after a year
  • Highest air and heat settings on the intense side
  • More limited heat settings
  • Have to opt for more expensive model if you want more attachments

Who it's for

The Laifen Swift isn't an exact copy of the Supersonic, but its similar design makes it an excellent compact option that can still dry hair impressively fast. Plus, it'll cost you less than $150.

Why we picked this

I'll be the first to admit that the Dyson Supersonic is an elegant hair dryer — but that elegance comes with the high price tag of $429. If you want to buy a dryer brand new but aren't into paying a few hundred bucks, the Laifen Swift offers much of what the Dyson does, but at roughly a third of the price.

At drastically different price points, you might assume that you're getting a drastically different experience, but having tested both, I find that the Laifen checks the boxes where it matters most. For instance, the Supersonic is popular because of its fast dry times. Though the Laifen Swift has 1,400 watts of power to the Supersonic's 1,600 watts, it still blows an impressively strong gust of air, and consistently dried my hair in a similar time frame as the Supersonic, give or take a few minutes.

The Supersonic also has a unique design, with a shorter nozzle than a traditional dryer. While Laifen's is solid where Dyson's is hollow, weight-wise, the Laifen is about a full pound lighter, making it a great option for travel and generally very easy to maneuver.

Dyson also popularized magnetic dryer attachments with the Supersonic. Laifen's attachments are just as solid and reliable as any of Dyson's attachments. That said, this model of the Laifen only comes with a concentrator attachment, but you can get a model with three attachments (including a diffuser) for just $20 more. While the Supersonic does come with five attachments, I've yet to meet the person with a head of hair that would require all five.

Finally, the Dyson Supersonic's price and brand indicate that it's a product built to list. Having tested both products for a limited period of time, I can't speak to this in the most concrete terms, but I will say that I have regularly used the Laifen Swift when I'm not actively testing other dryers, and it's held up for two years.

At the basic level, as a dryer, the Laifen more than gets the job done. It has one fewer temperature setting than the Supersonic, and can run too hot at its highest setting, but overall, if you're looking for something to dry your hair quickly, reliably, and without incurring too much damage to your hair or your wallet, the Laifen Swift is a solid choice.

T3 Aire 360

Best runner-up Airwrap dupe

$249.99 Amazon

All the best Dyson beauty dupes we've tested (11)

The Good & The Bad

  • Pouch case offers the best storage solution out of any multi-styler on the market
  • Ceramic curling barrels help create long-lasting and shinier curls
  • Round brush provides excellent shape and volume to hair
  • Lightweight and easy to style with for longer periods of time
  • More limited selection of attachments (though this could be a pro for some)
  • Same price as the Shark FlexStyle with fewer attachments
  • Need to switch curling barrels to switch curl direction
  • No diffuser attachment

Who it's for

If what entices you most about the Dyson Airwrap is the ability to curl your hair with less heat and while it's damp, the T3 Aire 360 is a better option for achieving shinier, longer lasting curls.

Why we picked this

A huge part of the reason the Dyson Airwrap blew up the way it did was because of its auto-wrapping curling attachments. While Dyson introduced the Coanda-powered attachment to the beauty space, T3 is closer to perfecting it.

Upfront, it's important to know that you will have to switch the curling barrels on the T3 multi-styler, and it is a little more annoying than with the Shark FlexStyle. Why? The T3 Aire 360 actually creates a more defined curl in the hair that lasts longer than any curl I got with the Airwrap (or any other multi-styler I've tried). The ceramic barrels also gave me the smoothest, shiniest-looking curls. I felt less inclined to style my curls as a looser blowout or brush them out, and found myself wanting to switch the direction of the curling barrel more frequently.

Still, it's not totally unmanageable, and if you anticipate using a multi-styler mostly to curl hair, the T3 Aire 360 is the way to go for achieving the best-looking results, especially if you have finer hair that tends to struggle more with holding the style. (As a disclaimer, I will say that this isn't a hard and fast rule — everyone's hair is different — but from the testing on my own fine hair and the research I did online, the general consensus seems to be that the T3 is better for longevity). However, for folks with naturally curly hair, this multi-styler disappointingly doesn't come with any diffuser. In fact, the attachment options are more limited, only including an oval brush, drying concentrator, and, of course, the curling barrels. What it does have, though, works well — the drying concentrator does the job, while the oval brush gives noticeably more volume than that of the Airwrap. I wish overall this tool were at least $20 cheaper as a result, but at least the attachments feel intentionally curated.

What it lacks in attachments, it makes up for in its storage solution, which comes in the form of an unassuming vegan leather pouch. If you've never owned a multi-styler, fussing over a pouch may seem odd, but as someone who has tested several and has limited storage space under my sink, the T3 pouch is genius, especially compared to the Airwrap's massive case. It also feels feasible to take with you when traveling, which can't be said for the Airwrap.

How we tested

The existence of this guide is the product of years of testing Dyson dupes for the Airwrap and Supersonic. I compiled all my findings in this guide for one curated list of the absolute best of the best, but if you want more specifics you can check out each of my more specific guides for the Airwrap and Supersonic.

Though I didn't retest each product for this guide, I used my notes and prior experiences to guide which products made the final selections. For every dupe I test, I make sure to use all the attachments and functions (as far as my hair allows — my 2a/2b waves are no use with wide tooth comb attachments). Generally speaking, here's what I look at when evaluating dupes:

  • Design: Not all dupes look like the products they're copying, but all dupes should have some elements of their design that either live up to or improve upon the original. For instance, the Dyson Supersonic is liked for being a compact and simple to use hair dryer, and the Laifen Swift emulates that, if not exactly in the same way. The Airwrap dupes, on the other hand, look more similar due to how integral the design is to the functionality of the product.

  • Price: In my humble opinion, a true dupe is significantly cheaper than the original product — otherwise you might as well just buy the original. That said, that doesn't always necessarily mean good dupes are dirt cheap. When evaluating my picks, I looked at what was less expensive, but still built with enough quality to be a well-performing tool in its own right, not just a $40 knock off that'll break in a few months.

  • Comparable performance: Dupes often require some compromise and concessions, whether that be less customization in a tool's performance or warranties. However, where the price shouldn't show a big difference is in the results you get from using the tool. Though the T3 Aire 360 doesn't have as many attachments as the original Airwrap, it produces curls that are just as good, if not better.

  • Life expectancy: The entire reason someone might invest in a Dyson tool is that the high price bakes in some expectation that it's built to last. When testing dupes, I look at any warranties, and where possible, test them periodically over long stretches of time to test (as much as I can) that a cheaper price doesn't equal a significantly shorter lifespan.
