Beast Mastery Hunter Mythic+ Guide (2024)

Welcome to the Beast Mastery Hunter Mythic+ guide for World of Warcraft prepatch 11.0! Here you will find tips and tricks to increase your survivability and damage so that you are ready for whatever challenges are thrown at you.

As a Beast Mastery Hunter, your main resource is Focus. Kill Command, Cobra Shot and Multi-Shot are what spend your Focus while Barbed Shot and Dire Beast generate it on top of the passive generation you get as well. Learning how to manage your Focus is important for an optimal performance.

Upon fully equipping your season 4 tier-set your Bestial Wrath and Dire Beast become more important. Your 2 set will now cause Bestial Wrath to summon a Dire Beast when used. Your 4 set allows for Dire Beast to cast Kill Command and benefit from Beast Cleave.

This guide provides ways to help improve your play as a Beast Mastery Hunter in separate Mythic+ encounters, whether you are new to the spec or not.

Mobility

Excellent

  • Beast Mastery Hunters are known for their exceptional single-target damage through high Bestial Wrath uptime while being able to dodge and weave throughout the battlefield and maintain their survivability with a plethora of defensives.
  • Beast Mastery Hunter’s also have access to an abundance of defensives like Aspect of the Turtle, Survival of the Fittest and Exhilaration that allow them to maintain safety.
  • However Beast Mastery Hunter’s have one massive weakness and this is their access to groupwide utility. Although they have access to Hunter's Mark this is the only buff they bring. This means it can be difficult to find a reason to bring them over something like a Demon Hunter or a Mage who offer more powerful buffs and groupwide defensives.

Talents

Patch 11.0 - The War Within

Beast Mastery Hunter

Killer Cobra

Explosive Venom

When to use this Spec

Use this spec in keys where there are more 3-4 target pulls versus 6-8 target pulls. Killer Cobra is a large single-target increase meaning you are trading a little bit of AoE for even more single-target damage.

Gameplay Altering Talents

Discover all talents that significantly alter your gameplay within the Spec and Class Talent trees. This section gives a concise overview of these talents and their applications but for a more detailed look check out the Rotation and Deep Dive sections below.

Spec Tree

  • Master Handler
    • This is a strong passive effect that causes your Barbed Shot damage to reduce the cooldown of your Kill Command.
  • Beast Cleave
    • This serves as your strongest source of AoE damage and has added functionality with Kill Cleave.
  • Huntmaster's Call
    • Very strong passive effect that can either increase your haste by 8% or give your pets 10% increased damage. Both of these are very good as you scale well with haste and your pets do all of your damage.
  • A Murder of Crows
    • A good passive damage source, which procs after you use Kill Command 5 times.
  • Killer Cobra
    • This serves to make your Bestial Wrath windows more consistent.

When to use this Spec

Use this spec in keys where there are more 6-8 target pulls. Brutal Companion paired with Explosive Venom is a large AoE boost at the cost of losing some single-target damage.

Talent Adjustments

Listing all the changes within Class and Spec tree compared to the default build.

Spec Tree

  • Added
    • Explosive Venom
      • Solid passive damage option that also interacts with Basilisk Collar.
    • Brutal Companion
      • Strong passive damage since 3 Barbed Shot casts happen fairly quickly.
  • Removed
    • A Murder of Crows
      • Removed for Brutal Companion.
    • Killer Cobra
      • Removed for Explosive Venom.

Rotation

Patch 11.0 - The War Within

Beast Mastery Hunter

Tier Set

  • 2-Set: Bestial Wrath summons a Dire Beast for 15 seconds.
  • 4-Set: Your most recently summoned Dire Beast now obeys Kill Command and can benefit from Beast Cleave.

Single-target

Opener Rotation

  • Since Kill Command has 2 charges your goal is to cast as many Kill Commands as possible without overcapping on charges, while also weaving in Barbed Shots as to not overcap on those as well. Below is an example of how your opener looks like using one of the recommended Killer Cobra or Explosive Venom specs and depending on the number of Barbed Shot resets and assuming you aren't playing Killer Cobra, among other factors:
  • This assumes that Dire Beast is cast on cooldown.
  • Use your active trinkets, Elemental Potion of Ultimate Power and racials like Blood Fury or Berserking after using Bestial Wrath.

Priority List

This is a general priority you aim to maintain throughout the fight.

  1. Cast Kill Command if it's available.
  2. Cast Barbed Shot if Kill Command is on cooldown.
  3. Cast Kill Shot if available.
  4. Cast Cobra Shot if Kill Command and Barbed Shot are on cooldown.

Multi Target

2 Target Opener Rotation

  • Below, you can see an example of how your opener looks like using the recommended Tyrannical or Fortified talent spec and depending on the number of Barbed Shot resets, among other factors.
  • This assumes that Dire Beast is cast on cooldown.
  • Use your active trinkets, Elemental Potion of Ultimate Power and racials like Blood Fury or Berserking after using Bestial Wrath.

2 Target Priority List

  1. Keep up Beast Cleave.
  2. Cast Kill Command if it's available.
  3. Keep up Barbed Shot on both targets.
  4. Cast Explosive Shot if talented.
  5. Cast Cobra Shot if Kill Command and Barbed Shot are on cooldown.
  6. Cast Kill Shot if available.

3+ Targets Opener Rotation

  • Below you can see one variation of the AoE opener rotation on 6 targets which assumes you wait a bit for the tank to gather mobs
  • Use your active trinkets, Elemental Potion of Ultimate Power and racials like Blood Fury or Berserking after using Bestial Wrath.

3+ Target Priority List

  1. Keep up Beast Cleave.
  2. Cast Kill Command if it's available.
  3. Keep up Barbed Shot on at least 2 targets.
  4. Cast Explosive Shot if talented.
  5. Cast Cobra Shot if Kill Command and Barbed Shot are on cooldown.
  6. Cast Kill Shot if available.

Deep Dive

Patch 11.0 - The War Within

Beast Mastery Hunter

Tracking Thrill of the Hunt and knowing when to use Barbed Shot.

  • Unless you have 1 point in Scent of Blood, never cast 2 Barbed Shots back-to-back.
  • Outside of Bestial Wrath you want to cast at least one spell between Barbed Shot casts.
  • During Bestial Wrath you want to cast Barbed Shot as little as possible and focus on resetting Kill Command through Cobra Shot.
  • High Thrill of the Hunt uptime comes from doing these things and just naturally spacing out uses of Barbed Shot.

Below, you find an example on how to correctly manage Barbed Shot casts.

Maximizing your damage output during Bestial Wrath.

  • Ensure you are going into Bestial Wrath with at least 1 charge of Kill Command, but having 2 is best.
  • Make sure you don't focus starve by weaving in Barbed Shot during this window and not letting it over-cap on charges.
  • Try to line this damage window up with either of the buffs provided by Huntmaster's Call. These are quite large and Bestial Wrath windows are further buffed by these.
  • This is not a fixed rotation; This is just one example of how to play during your Bestial Wrath window. War Orders procs can increase your amount of Kill Command resets without needing to cast Cobra Shot along with Wild Call increasing the amount of Barbed Shot resets you can have.

Understanding Mechanics

Rotational min-maxing is just one aspect of mastering a specialization, but there are numerous other key mechanics that influence your performance. Use the following guides to improve them.

  • Pandemic
  • Spell Queue Window
  • Stat Diminishing Returns

Boss Tips

Hackclaw's War-Band

  • Pre-use a defensive for Gash Frenzy.
  • Maintain Barbed Shot on at least 2 boss targets.
  • Use Feign Death if you get targeted by Marked for Butchery.

Gutshot

  • Apply Barbed Shot to at least one hyena.
  • If the hyenas are stacked on top of the boss you can proc Beast Cleave.

Treemouth

  • You can use Disengage to counter the drag in very easily.
  • Apply Barbed Shot to at least 1-2 slimes and make sure to keep up Beast Cleave while they are alive.

Decatriarch Wratheye

  • Make sure to pool Kill Commands for when the boss casts Rotburst Totem.
  • You can also use a defensive on Withered Eruption since it is the only important damage source in the fight.

Trash Tips

  • Drop a Binding Shot to counter Claw Fighter's Vicious Clawmangle. If one is fixated on you Intimidation is also something you can use to stop it.

Pre Dungeon Start

  • Before key start use a Elemental Potion of Ultimate Power for a nominal dps gain.

Boss Tips

The Lost Dwarves

  • Put Olaf on focus so you can quickly interrupt Defensive Bulwark.

Bromach

  • When a Quaking Totem dies all enemies except the boss take 100% increased damage if they were on top of the totem when it died. Make sure to have Beast Cleave up during this time especially.

Talondras

  • You can remove 1 stack of Inexorable with Intimidation.
  • Be sure to use defensives when targeted by Earthen Shards. If this overlaps with a Crushing Stomp consider pressing a larger defensive.

Emberon

  • Make sure to properly control your pets during the intermission as they are your #1 damage source.

Deios

  • Time Sink can be removed with Disengage.
  • Use a defensive on Wing Buffet.

Trash Tips

Pre Dungeon Start

  • Before key start use a Elemental Potion of Ultimate Power for a nominal dps gain.

Boss Tips

Granyth

  • Make sure to always use a defensive for Shards of Stone.
  • Look to use Freezing Trap on a freshly spawned Nokhud Saboteur if the boss is below 10-15% health.

Raging Tempest

  • Make sure to stay at 10 stacks of Surge of Power throughout the whole boss fight.
  • Use a defensive for Lightning Strike and Electrical Storm.

Teera & Maruuk

  • Keep Beast Cleave active the entire time they are stacked.
  • Also, keep Barbed Shot on both bosses since the damage they take is shared.
  • Use a defensive for Gale Arrow and stack with the rest to the group so the tornados that spawn are synced.
  • Quick Shot can be countered with Shadowmeld and Feign Death.

Balakar Khan

  • Drop Crackling Upheaval in a good spot because of the void zone it leaves in P2.
  • Use a defensive if you are the target for Static Spear because it hits you twice.
  • Interrupt a Nokhud Stormcaster during the intermission to get them stacked and look to stop any Storm Bolt with Intimidation.

Trash Tips

  • Swift Stab always hits the furthest target in combat. If you are dying, try to move closer so someone else is the furthest target or use a defensive.
  • Look to stop Rotting Wind with either an interrupt or a stun.
  • Also, look to stop Rally the Clan using a stun.

Pre Dungeon Start

  • Before key start use a Elemental Potion of Ultimate Power for a nominal dps gain.

Boss Tips

Overgrown Ancient

  • Use a defensive for Burst Forth.
  • Make sure you are swapping to the Ancient Branch as soon as it spawns. The bleed that you get from this add when it spawns Splinterbark, this can be Stoneform.

Crawth

  • Try to have your cooldowns line up for when you stun the boss with Firestorm because the boss takes 75% more damage for 12 seconds.

Vexamus

  • Use a defensive if you get picked for Mana Bombs.

Echo of Doragosa

  • You can Disengage the Power Vacuum cast the boss does before you get pulled all the way in.
  • Use a defensive on Energy Bomb as there's a chance the boss also picks you for Arcane Missiles.

Trash Tips

  • Use a stun or hard CC to stop Mystic Blast.
  • Stand far away to bait Vicious Ambush on you. This picks the furthest target away and is canceled by Line of Sight, out of everyone in the group you lose the least when this targets you.

Pre Dungeon Start

  • Before key start use a Elemental Potion of Ultimate Power for a nominal dps gain.

Boss Tips

Irideus

  • Rotate your defensives for Power Overload and Static Surge.

Gulping Goliath

  • Apply Barbed Shot to the boss and at least one Curious Swoglet while its alive.
  • Rotate your defensives for Overpowering Croak.
  • You can use Beast Cleave on this boss to make it less hectic if a clear is missed.
  • You can Feign Death the Curious Swoglet fixate if you are ever in a bad scenario.
  • Use Binding Shot and maybe Tar Trap to help control the frogs for your group.

Khajin

  • Use defensives when you notice that the healer might be struggling.
  • If your targeted by Icy Devastator you can use Feign Death.

Primal Tsunami

  • Try to stack with the rest of your group for Infused Globule so they spawn stacked and give you more space in the room.
  • Use Intimidation to stop Inundate casts during the intermission.
  • Use a defensive for Tempest's Fury.

Trash Tips

  • Focus down Containment Apparatuses and looks to stop their Expulse cast.
  • Also look to stop Demoralizing Shout which comes from Refti Defenders.
  • Try to use Binding Shot and Tar Trap for pulls that include Curious Swoglets.

Pre Dungeon Start

  • Before key start use a Elemental Potion of Ultimate Power for a nominal dps gain.

Boss Tips

Leymor

  • Make sure to always use a defensive for Consuming Stomp.
  • Maintain Barbed Shot on the boss and at least 1-2 slimes while they are alive.
  • Activating Beast Cleave on this boss is not a ST increase but it is your only AOE option to kill the slimes.

Azureblade

  • Apply Barbed Shot to the boss and the Draconic Image while it's alive.
  • Make sure your pet is always attacking the add since the boss's hitbox can be quite big your cleave might miss.

Telash Greywing

  • Make sure to use‍a defensivewhen targeted by‍Absolute Zero.
  • If you're targeted by Icy Devastator you can use Feign Death.

Umbrelskul

  • The crystals hitbox is quite big so you can utilize Beast Cleave to hit the crystals while priority targeting the boss. Make sure to always have a Bestial Wrath ready for these phases that occur at 75%, 50% and 25%.
  • Always have a defensive available for the Detonating Crystals phase.

Trash Tips

  • Set focus to Rune Seal Keepers so you can easily interrupt Icy Bindings.

Pre Dungeon Start

  • Before key start use a Elemental Potion of Ultimate Power for a nominal dps gain.

Boss Tips

Magmatusk

  • You can use Feign Death on Lava Spray.
  • Start to use defensives on Magma Eruption when he reaches 3 stacks. Before then just use Exhilaration on the initial hit.
  • Always aim the Blazing Charge towards a nearby wall so that it won't charge the boss fully across the room.

Chargath, Bane of Scales

  • Use Disengage to remove yourself from the Erupted Ground underneath your spear.
  • Use a defensive for Slag Eruption.
  • You can also use Feign Death on Dragon Strike while the boss is mid air, you should be at max range to have the highest success rate.

Forgemaster Gorek

  • Use a defensive for Blazing Aegis.

Warlord Sargha

  • Use a defensive if you are targeted by Molten Gold.
  • The boss takes 50% more damage after you break her intermission shield for 10 seconds, try to save your damage cooldowns for this.

Trash Tips

  • Use interrupts on Molten Core. This going off is almost certainly going to wipe you.
  • Also, look to use stops on Dragonbone Axe, this requires a stun or displacement.

Pre Dungeon Start

  • Before key start use a Elemental Potion of Ultimate Power for a nominal dps gain.

Boss Tips

Melidrussa Chillworn

  • Use Disengage and Aspect of the Cheetah to help escape Chillstorm if you are picked.
  • At 75% and 45%, she summons whelps, don't AoE these! Your priority is to break the shield the boss gains.
  • Use defensives during Chillstorm.

Kokia Blazehoof

  • Use defensives for Inferno.
  • Make sure you are attacking the Blazebound Firestorm whenever it is active.

Erkhart Stormvein / Kyrakka

  • Make sure to have Beast Cleave active while both bosses are stacked.
  • Keep Barbed Shot up on both targets as much as possible.
  • Use defensives on Flamespit, if a Interrupting Cloudburst overlaps with this consider using extra defensives or committing Aspect of the Turtle.

Trash Tips

  • Make sure to stop‍Tectonic Slamwith Intimidation. If it is shielded you must Tranquilizing Shot first.
  • You can stopPrimalist Flamedancer's Flame Dance with Intimidation. You can also purge the on-death channel with Tranquilizing Shot.
  • While fighting High Channeler Ryvati make sure to use Tranquilizing Shot on at least one of the Primal Thunderclouds as soon as they spawn.

Pre Dungeon Start

  • Communicate with your team to see if you are skipping the first mob you encounter, if so use Camouflage to skip once the key starts.

Affixes

Learn how to effectively handle various Mythic+ Affixes as a Beast Mastery Hunter. Depending on the level of the Mythic+ Dungeon, you contend with up to two additional Affixes alongside Fortified and Tyrannical.

  • Entangling
    • Disengage and Aspect of the Cheetah.
      • Posthaste automatically clears entangling when you Disengage.
      • If Disengage is not up and you need to escape quickly you can also use Aspect of the Cheetah.
  • Incorporeal
    • Scare Beast, Freezing Trap and Counter Shot.
      • Scare Beast works great.
      • Freezing Trap also works well if you can guarantee landing it.
      • Interrupt them with Counter Shot.
  • Bolstering
    • Tar Trap and Binding Shot
      • Either of these can be used to help your take start kitting once mobs start getting high stacks of bolster.
  • Raging
    • Tranquilizing Shot
      • You can utilize Tranquilizing Shot to remove Raging from one mob every 10 seconds.
  • Spiteful
    • Tar Trap, Binding Shot and Intimidation.
      • Use Intimidation to crowd control specific Spiteful enemies.
      • Utilize Tar Trap and Binding Shot to crowd control multiple Spiteful Shades simultaneously to keep them away for a few seconds.
  • Sanguine
    • Bursting Shot and High Explosive Trap.
      • Use High Explosive Trap if talented to force enemies out of Sanguine Ichor.
      • You can utilize Bursting Shot too but this requires an extra talent point and for you to be in melee range.
  • Bursting
    • Aspect of the Turtle
      • This is the only standout button you can use as it immunes all stacks of Burst.

Stat Priority

Patch 11.0 - The War Within

Beast Mastery Hunter

Understand your secondary stat priority and the tertiary stats needed for optimal performance during Mythic+ dungeons as a Beast Mastery Hunter. For more detailed information, visit the Stats and Attributes guide.

Higher Item level items are better in most scenarios. For an accurate representation of what item to equip you should use Simcraft! A static "Stat Priority" is just a starting point and can easily shift depending on your individual gear.

All secondary stats are affected by diminishing returns. Click here to learn more!

Tertiary

  • Avoidance - Great stat to reduce the damage intake of "Area of Effect" abilities.
  • Leech - Provides additional healing through damage dealing. The damage of your pets does not heal you thus Leech is an awful tertiary for you since most of your damage is coming from your pets.
  • Speed - Niche tertiary that can be very useful and has been proven useful in the past. Makes playing certain mechanics a lot easier.

Trinkets

Below you can find active and passive alternatives to the recommended trinkets. Do note that some trinkets are better than others depending on the scenario.

Active Trinket alternatives

  • Storm-Eater's Boon
    • Roots you in place during the active, so you have to able to use it without risking death.
  • Mirror of Fractured Tomorrows
    • Strong 3 minute on use.
  • Algeth'ar Puzzle Box
    • Provides a large amount of Mastery with a channel time on a 3 minute cooldown.
  • Ashes of the Embersoul
    • Strong 2 minute on use with a minute haste penalty after.

Passive Trinket alternatives

  • Whispering Incarnate Icon
    • Is better or worse depending on how many people in your group are using it.
  • Pip's Emerald Friendship Badge
    • Solid trinket with a small amount of stats passively, with a larger proc.
  • Ominous Chromatic Essence
    • Is better or worse depending on how many people in your group are using it.
  • Controlled Current Technique
    • Solid single-target trinket, loses a bit of value on AoE.

Embellishments

Patch 11.0 - The War Within

Beast Mastery Hunter

  • 1x Blue Silken Lining
    • It's a good choice if you have over 90% health most of the time and during your cooldowns.
    • The optimal slots to craft on are Neck, Waist, and Boots depending on your available gear.
  • Adaptive Dracothyst Armguards
    • High uptime on a good chunk of stats.
    • Safer pick that won't have a downside unlike Blue Silken Lining.

Honorable Mentions

  • Elemental Lariat
    • Good to use if you have access to the maximum amount of gems, and decent in multi target scenarios especially if your Blue Silken Lining uptime is not great.

Remaining Sparks

  • Make sure to apply Alchemical Flavor Pocket if you have an additional crafted item equipped to keep your food buff even if you died.
  • Crafted items are 525 item level and regular items are 528 on max item level therefore it's not beneficial to equip crafted items outside of your 2x embellishments unless you don't have access to other high item level gear on that slot.

Races

Patch 11.0 - The War Within

Beast Mastery Hunter

For min-maxing a Beast Mastery Hunter in Mythic+, different racial traits can provide a tremendous benefit to your characters. If this is not your top goal, picking a race that fits your style works just as well.

  • Stoneform -- Dwarf
    • One of the most potent racials in Mythic+ currently and historically.
    • Use-cases:
      • Bursting stacks.
      • Splinterbark on Overgrown Ancient (Algeth'ar Academy).
      • Deep Chill from Glacial Proto-Dragons (Halls of Infusion).
      • Withering from Fetid Rotsingers and Brackenhide Shapers (Brackenhide Hollow).
      • Earthen Shards from Sentinel Talondras (Uldaman: Legacy of Tyr).
      • Stolen Time from Infinite Timereavers (Uldaman: Legacy of Tyr).
      • Dragon Strike from Chargath (Neltharus).
      • Bold Ambush from Qalashi Hunters (Neltharus).
  • Shadowmeld -- Night Elf
    • Also one of the most potent racials in Mythic+ historically.
    • Use-cases:
      • Cast Shadowmeld when Forgemaster Gorek (Neltharus) targets you with Blazing Aegis, this completely negate the mechanic for you and the rest of the group.
      • Run past basically any mob and then cast Shadowmeld to make them reset. Even works on mobs that have stealth detection if you get enough distance before you Shadowmeld.
  • Blood Fury -- Orc
    • Strong racial for damage both because of Command and Blood Fury which lines up with Call of the Wild.
    • 20% reduced Stun duration on you which can be useful in some Mythic+ dungeons.
  • Escape Artist -- Gnome
    • Free yourself from roots.
  • Rocket Jump -- Goblin
    • Do a small jump in the direction your character is facing.
    • While you're in the Rocket Jump animation you are placed on a global cooldown until your character lands.
  • Berserking -- Troll
    • Strong DPS racial that lines up with Call of the Wild.
    • Reduce the duration of movement impairing effects by 20%.

Recommendation

Dwarf and Night Elf aren't the overall best racials in terms of DPS but their abilities have such a big impact on your Mythic+ experience that you need to use either of them if you're serious about pushing keys with your Beast Mastery Hunter.
