ER-DELL Harry Eisinger, 31. Small Fire on Navy Transport Fire broke out yesterday on the Navy attack transport USS Bexar which is under repair at Pier 36 here. Port Fire Marshal John Egan said the blaze was confined to the chain locker and was quickly extinguished. It started in a pile of oily rags. Damage was minor.

Valley Candidate -Maurice Barcus of Madera said day he is a candidate for the Republican nomination for the Assembly to oppose Democratic incumbent Gordon Dinton Jr. of Merced. J. Harriett Cobbey Gilman Harriett Cobbey Gilman, mother of Examiner classified advertising director Carl C. Gilman, died yesterday in Burlingame.

She was 79. A native of Nebraska, Mrs. Gilman lived for many years in Denver and Pueblo, Colo. More obituaries- -Page 55. She was active in the P.E.O.

Sisterhood and was president of the organization's Denver and Pueblo chapters. Her husband, the late George Gilman, was automobile editor of the Denver Post and a prominent automobile dealer in Colorado. Her home was at 2805 Rivera Drive, Burlingame. In addition to her son, Mrs. Gilman is survived by her sister, Mrs.

R. N. Salyer of Los Angeles. Funeral services will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at the Chapel of the Highlands, El Camino Real at Millwood Drive, Millbrae.

Bruce Bielaski Herald Tribune News Service GREAT NECK (N. Bruce Bielaski, 80, former chief of the FBI and the man who hired J. Edgar Hoover as a mail and file clerk, died yesterday in his home here. Mr. Bielaski was an attorney.

His career with the Justice Department extended from 1905 to 1918. He became chief of the Bureau of Investigation, as the FBI was initially known, in 1912, four years after it was created as a Justice Department division. During World War I he headed secret government probes into German activities in the U. S. After the war, he was admitted to practice before the U.

S. Supreme Court. In 1925 he became a special assistant to the U. S. Attorney General in the successful prosecution of liquor smuggling rings.

From 1929 to 1959, Mr. Bielaski founded and directed the arson department. Later he became assistant general manager for the National Board of Fire Underwriters. Mr. Bielaski was born in Montgomery County, Md.

DOCTOR MacAGY. Dr. Jer a ne MacAgy, former acting director of the Palace of the Legion of Honor here, died Tuesday in Houston, Texas, after an illness of several days. At the time of her death, Dr. MacAgy was head of the St.

Thomas University fine arts department, where she had earned an international reputation for compiling a remarkable series of art exhibitions and catalogs. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, 50 years ago, Doctor MacAgy received special training for museum work at Radcliffe and completed work for her doctorate while on the staff of the Cleveland I Art Museum. In 1941, she joined the of Honor staff, serving for 14 years as curator, assistant and then acting director. In 1955, Doctor MacAgy was appointed director of the Contemporary Art Museum of Houston, and later joined the St. Thomas University faculty.
